KAY -- Down Syndrome, IQ 58. Kay was 22 years of age after completing the Bannatyne Program in 1990
Here is the letter from Kay's father (who is a professor):
Dear Dr. Bannatyne:
We would like you to know how pleased we are with the Bannatyne Reading, Writing, Spelling and Language Program. Our daughter, Kay, who is Down Syndrome and (now) 22 years of age, is just completing the program. It took about eight years for her to complete it.
We realize the program was not written for students at her level. However after an exhaustive search for a comprehensive special education reading program, the Bannatyne Program was the only one we found which offered a structured approach to reading and language. The school system suggested the program for Kay. We are happy with the results. Kay has surpassed by far what we had imagined she could do, thanks to your Program.
The Bannatyne Program encompasses so many aspects--reading, comprehension, speech/language, spelling, etc. It gives the student exposure to many varied words, ideas, and situations, which are needed so badly for the special education person. We believe the Bannatyne Program was one of the primary contributors to Kay's ability to achieve a sixth grade level (her Intelligence Quotient is 58).
We wish you continued success in your program and hope that many more persons with special needs will have the opportunity to use the Bannatyne Program.
Sincerely yours, (signed by both of Kay's parents)
Comment: Using the Bannatyne Program, Kay with an IQ of 58 took 8 years to reach a sixth grade reading achievement level which is only one or two years longer than regular students in regular classes using regular reading programs. If you count in another year for regular kindergarten instruction then Kay took only one year longer than regular school students! Kay was taught one-on-one in a school resource room situation by a special education teacher for one school period daily.
The Bannatyne Reading Program is a comprehensive, integrated reading program, writing program, spelling program, language program, and comprehension training program. The Bannatyne Reading Program is unlike any other reading programs currently available. This means you will find many features which are only in the Bannatyne Reading Program. In some Commonwealth countries the program may be referred to as: Bannatyne Programme, or Bannatyne Reading Programme.
