The following sections on motivation will explore almost every facet of the nature of motivation, the behavioral theory behind it, as well as the contribution of motivation to successful educational results for both students and teachers. For example, did you know that high motivation accounts for 80 percent of anyone's success story in life or in school? Therefore, the commonest cause of school failure is a lack of positive motivation. Furthermore, if student motivation is responsible for such a large chunk of any student's success, surely we teachers should not only be learning what motivation is, but also how it can be best implemented in the classroom and built into the curriculum. If 80 percent of student success is rooted in positive student motivation, should not 50 percent of the curriculum budget be allocated to positive motivators for all students from the most handicapped to the most gifted--from kindergarten to college?

Many practical methods of motivation and reinforcers of motivation are presented in the pages that follow. However, do not select just one or two, but rather implement as many as you possibly can, including of course, praise.

The Bannatyne Reading Writing Spelling and Language Program has numerous built-in motivators of all kinds on many levels--therefore teachers and students love it.
