100 WAYS TO PRAISE

Be generous with praise, you'll make people happy

Smile as you give praise, and while you are teaching too!

Use student's personal names often, and in a friendly way

Always look for the best work, not the worst

If you give a Take-the-Cake (a cup-cake) award each week, make sure each student receives at least one during the year

Make sure each student receives a Certificate of Excellence at least once a week

Praise a student during any activity whenever something is done well (be generous)

Praise a student's final achievement for the activity "job-in-hand"

Praise the effort and energy that the student is putting into the task--they ARE all trying!

Praise any improvement from yesterday--always praise improvement, any improvement at all

Praise the feelings, the happiness, the enthusiasm, the enjoyment

Praise the speed of performance but never criticize slowness. For some less able readers slow IS fast!

Praise the manner of the performance--neatness, quality, concentration on task, etc.

Praise mediocre performances and students will be motivated to improve

Make the 100 sayings below habitual

Learn them by heart, and always use your students' own names

Spread them around to all students, especially the ones who struggle
