What SIZE, WEIGHT, and COLOR of PAPER do I use for printing?
Use ONLY A4 (ISO) 80 gsm and LETTER-SIZE (North America) 20 lb WHITE office paper when printing out any of the Bannatyne Reading, Writing, Spelling and Language Program materials.
The A4 and Letter-size standard paper was deliberately chosen, along with the font and print-point sizes, for optimal learning by ALL students of any age or IQ.
NOTE: Any reduction in the size of the pages (or print) will spoil the effectiveness of the Bannatyne Program and do a great disservice to your students. As my New Zealand mother used to say: "Do not spoil the ship for a ha'penny worth of tar."
A4 paper is 210 millimeters by 297 millimeters. Letter-Size standard paper is 8.5 inches by 11 inches.
The weight of the paper needs to be at least 80 gsm or 20 pounds. This weight of paper is likely to feed through the printer properly and is less likely to tear.
Please do not modify the Bannatyne Program in any way whatsoever.
Can I print on both sides of the paper?
Please print ONLY on ONE SIDE of the (80 gsm / 20 lb) white office paper when printing out any of the Bannatyne Program materials. We purposely intended the Bannatyne Program to be printed only on one side of the paper for the following reasons:
- The margin on the right-hand side of the paper is smaller than the margin on the left-hand side of the paper. The left-hand margin allows for 3-hole punching, whereas the right-hand margin does not. The right-hand margin was made smaller so that the size of the text could be made larger for optimal learning. When both sides are printed, the backside does not have enough of a margin for hole punching.
- Printing on both sides of the paper is more expensive because special, much heavier, coated paper has to be used to prevent bleed-through or see-through. Bleed-through will occur with the less expensive standard (80 gsm / 20 lb) office paper and this bleed-through obstructs the reading of the material. This is true for both inkjet and laser printers.
- The double-sided printing is difficult because the paper may occasionally misfeed through the printer causing blank pages or misnumbered pages. The blank pages have to be removed before printing the second side. If the misfeed occurs during the printing of the second side, then the pages will be misnumbered.
- It is more difficult to reprint a double-sided page because you have to selectively print a single page, then turn the paper over and place it back in the printer and selectively print a single page on the other side.
- Note that with single-sided printing it's very easy to reprint a single page or a range of pages.
We strongly recommend that the Bannatyne Program be printed out on only one side of the paper.
Can I staple the pages together?
No. Do not staple the Workbook pages together before the students use them, because the stapling does not allow the pages to lie flat. The use of three-ring binders is strongly recommended and we have provided insert labels for these binders on Disc 1 of the Bannatyne Program. Alternatively, a Plastic or Wire Comb Binding Machine may be used as long as there is enough clearance for the pages to easily lie flat when the student is using them.
Can I print the Workbooks in draft mode to save ink?
No. Do not print in draft mode as the print is too light and difficult to read.
Print ONLY in STANDARD mode with full black printing.
Can I print the colored materials in draft mode to save ink?
No. Do not print in draft mode as the print is too light and difficult to read.
Print ONLY in STANDARD mode with full color printing.
Can I print the Teacher Guides, Grapheme Book, and other colored materials in black and white, or gray, or grayscale?
No. Please print ALL colored materials IN COLOR as this optimizes learning and provides the teacher with the color-coded vowel solutions to many of the activities. Only the Student Workbooks should be printed in black and white.
The Bannatyne Reading Program is an excellent, tested reading program. The Bannatyne Reading Program is unlike any other reading programs currently available. This means you will find many features which are only in the Bannatyne Reading Program. In some Commonwealth countries the program may be referred to as: Bannatyne Programme, or Bannatyne Reading Programme.
